Obtaining Delaware Death Certificates

Introduction to Delaware Death Certificates

This article is designed to help you get a Delaware Death certificate.  Counter to common belief, not everything is on the Internet.  Personal Death certificates are one of the items that are not readily available online, and that is probably a good thing.  You do not want your Death certificate in the public domain, where it can be seen by anyone.  However, this does not mean that you can’t easily get your Death certificate.

Delaware Death certificates have been maintained by the Delaware Office of Vital Statistics for individuals that died in the state of Delaware since 1969.  For previous years, write to Archives Hall of Records, Dover, DE 19901.

Delaware Death Certificate Authorized Persons

If you are requesting a death certificate for a death that occurred after July 1, 1997, the social security number of the decedent will not be included on the certificate that you receive unless you are an immediate family member of the decedent, the executor of the decedent’s estate, a party specified on the death certificate such as the informant, funeral director/ embalmer, or certifying physician, or other persons as authorized by Department of Public Health.  For any death occurring after December 31, 2001, the “Administrative Purposes” section of the death certificate which includes the decedent’s social security number, occupation, business/industry, race, Hispanic origin, and educational level will not be included on the certificate you receive except to the above mentioned parties.
