Introduction to Idaho Birth Certificates

This article is designed to help you get an Idaho birth certificate.  Counter to common belief, not everything is on the Internet.  Individual birth certificates are one of the items that are not readily available online, and that is probably a good thing.  You do not want your birth certificate in the public domain, where it can be seen by anyone.  However, this does not mean that you can’t easily get your birth certificate.    

Idaho birth certificates have been maintained by the Idaho Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics for individuals born in the state of Idaho since 1911.

Idaho Death Index, 1911-51	This database is an index to the death records of the state of Idaho for the years 1911-51. In addition to providing the name of the deceased, the index provides the date and place of death, the deceased's birth date, and their death certificate number. With the information provided in this index you may be able to obtain a death certificate. Death certificates can be very valuable because of the amount of information they may provide (see extended description).

Idaho Birth Certificate Authorized Persons

By Idaho state law, Idaho birth certificates are confidential records and can only be obtained by the following authorized individuals:

• Person Named on the Idaho Birth Certificate
• Mother/Father (or Legal Guardian) of Person Named on the Idaho Birth Certificate
• Husband/Wife of Person Named on the Idaho Birth Certificate 
• Grandparents of individual named on the Idaho birth certificate
• Son/Daughter of Person Named on the Idaho Birth Certificate 
• Grandchildren of individual named on the Idaho birth certificate
• Sister/Brother of Person Named on the Idaho Birth Certificate 
• Legal Representative of an Authorized Person of Person Named on the Idaho Birth Certificate
• Individuals who provide documentation showing a Idaho birth certificate is needed for their property rights

Anyone can obtain an Idaho Birth Certificate, 100 years or later from the date of the birth for genealogy or other reasons.

Option 3 – In Person

In Person in Idaho: You may go to any county health department in the State of Idaho to obtain a certified copy of an Idaho birth certificate. Most Idaho birth certificates can be issued while you wait.

Idaho Birth Certificate Ordering Cost

The fee to search for an Idaho birth certificate is $13.00, which includes one certified copy of the Idaho birth certificate or a "Certificate of Failure to Find." For each additional copy of the Idaho birth certificate ordered at the same time, the fee is $13.00. Checks or Money Orders should be made payable to "Vital Records." Please do not send cash.
