This article is designed to help you get a Kansas Death certificate.  Counter to common belief, not everything is on the Internet.  Personal Death certificates are one of the items that are not readily available online, and that is probably a good thing.  You do not want your Death certificate in the public domain, where it can be seen by anyone.  However, this does not mean that you can’t easily get your Death certificate.  

Kansas Death certificates have been maintained by the Kansas Office of Vital Statistics for individuals that died in the state of Kansas since 1911.

 

Kansas Death Certificate Authorized Persons

 

By Kansas state law, Kansas Death certificates are confidential records and can only be obtained by the following authorized individuals:

  • Immediate family member of individual named on the Kansas Death certificate
  • Someone who can provide legal proof the record is necessary for the determination of personal property rights
  • Legal Representative of an Authorized Person of Person Named on the Kansas Death Certificate

 

Kansas Death Certificate for Genealogy Purpose

 

Currently, the Office of Vital Statistics does allow requests for genealogical research. Pre-1940 records may be requested by an individual related as at least a cousin. Post 1940 records must be requested by an immediate family member.

In Person in Kansas: You may go to any county health department in the State of Kansas to obtain a certified copy of a Kansas Death certificate. Most Kansas Death certificates can be issued while you wait.

 

Kansas Death Certificate Ordering Cost

 

The fee to search for an Kansas Death certificate is $13.00, which includes one certified copy of the Kansas Death certificate or a "Certificate of Failure to Find." For each additional copy of the Kansas Death certificate ordered at the same time, the fee is $8.00. Checks or Money Orders should be made payable to "Vital Records." Please do not send cash. Fees are not refundable. Additional fees are required for expedited service.
